Training Program

General Information

The RCC Training Academy opened on October 16, 2000, with 12 students. Currently RCC is only one of two DPS&C facilities that operates its own training academy. The Academy is located adjacent to the Dale Ravencraft Firing Range, which is named in memory of a former Correctional Officer. New Correctional Officers and non-security employees receive their initial training here. The training topics include self defense, cell entry, supervision of inmates, searches, first aid/CPR, suicide prevention, firearms, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and other relevant topics. The Training Department also conducts in-service training throughout the year for all staff members. The training staff consists of a Major, a Lieutenant, and a Field Training Officer (FTO’s) assigned to each shift, one assigned to the Field Office. The FTO’s hold the rank of Sergeant Master.

Mission Statement

The mission of Rayburn Correctional Center’s Training Academy is to prepare and maintain the best-trained staff for this facility. We will achieve this goal by providing thorough and comprehensive training for new correctional officers and annual training for all staff. The Training Academy program is designed to instill the concepts of discipline, unity, and professionalism into new recruits. The Training Academy stresses the Department’s primary missions: public safety, and the safety of staff and inmates.

In order to attain our goals, the following objectives will be met:

Provide annual in-service training to all employees;

Provide quality training to new employees;

Provide initial training and annual recertification on all  institutional firearms;

Provide quality training and certification in less lethal munitions, electronic restraining devices, and chemical agents;

Provide quarterly review of emergency policies to security staff;

Provide a library of videos and books available to any employee;

Coordinate mandatory Departmental Training for Supervisors (CPTP and Civil Service Training);
